On this blog I have made no secret of my previous positive experiences with tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs) and my desire to once again enjoy the hobby. And I have openly advocated for people to give the games a try because they can be a lot of fun, are a great way to spend time with family and friends (or meet people and forge new friendships), and offer potential benefits related to one’s personal development.
Most recently, I have shared my positive firsthand experience with the Call of Cthulhu Starter Set and its solo scenario, “Alone Against the Flames.” I finished reading the introductory rules yesterday and, in addition to reviewing the rules again, I am looking forward to reviewing the remaining scenarios and putting someone through the adventures as the “Keeper.”
If you enjoy horror and mystery fiction, I recommend that you give Call of Cthulhu a shot. Not because of my own admittedly limited experience with the game, but because the game is SO popular (#1 TTRPG in Japan) and has been around for SO long. With that being said, Dungeons & Dragons or D&D is the most recognized and most popular TTRPG in the world. It is often the “gateway” to the hobby for many people and many people that enjoy playing D&D never move on to playing other games. Perhaps you know people that play D&D or you are wanting to see what all the fuss is about when it comes to the game. Or perhaps you just find the fantasy genre more appealing than the investigative and cosmic/Lovecraftian horror theme of Call of Cthulhu. And if you want to give D&D a shot, I can point you to perhaps one of the easiest ways to give it a try.
Below is a link to an adventure that you can play with Bob World Builder of the Bob World Builder YouTube channel. You can go through an adventure with him and see if perhaps you want to try your hand at the more complete experience with either an online game or an in-person game with family and/or friends (or prospective friends). Frankly, I would still encourage you to give a full game a try before ruling out TTRPGs as a pastime. But perhaps taking part in this little exercise will stoke your interest and enthusiasm for giving TTRPGs a try.
I wish you well on your journey of exploration. Have fun! 😃
