Last night I got to enjoy some fantastic blues music that was capped off by the evening’s headline performer, Buddy Guy. Last summer, I got to see him perform during his Damn Right Farewell tour. Had that tour marked his last public performances, it was a fine send-off. Yet I expressed my hopes on this blog that Mr. Guy would continue to occasionally play an event, such as his annual series of performances in Chicago each January at his club, Buddy Guy’s Legends. Fortunately, for blues fans, he evidently is, at least for a time. Fortunately for me, I got tickets to last night’s show at Buddy Guy’s Legends as a Christmas gift.
Buddy didn’t disappoint. He still plays the guitar like nobody’s business and he is the consummate entertainer. You can just feel the love other musicians, venue staff, and his fans have for him. He is one of those men that you just know would be a delight to spend time with as you listen to his stories and his music. You wouldn’t be at all surprised to walk away afterwards having heard something wise, profound, and quite possibly amusing.
Stefan Hillesheim was the opening act and he was great. Born in Germany, ventured to Los Angeles to study his craft, and now residing in Chicago where he is helping to keep the blues alive and vibrant. I will certainly attend another of his performances if I have the opportunity.
Below are links to blog posts that I have previously posted regarding the legend, Mr Buddy Guy. Regardless of whether or not you are a blues fan, I encourage you to see and hear Mr. Guy perform while he is still playing and still with us if you enjoy seeing and hearing live music. And perhaps check out his catalog of music.
