Rhode Island Hot Wieners

I certainly enjoy a good hot dog or sausage and I have shared my love of encased meats on a handful of occasions on this blog (see links below).
Prior to venturing to Newport, Rhode Island for vacation, I was made aware of a Rhode Island tradition that I needed to try—the hot wiener. I thoroughly enjoy a Chicago dog that has been “dragged through the garden” and in the Akron, Ohio area I have enjoyed cheese coneys from Skyline Chili. In the Washington, DC area, I have enjoyed half-smokes. So in addition to the seafood that I planned to enjoy while I was on my coastal vacation, I made up my mind to sample Rhode Island’s contribution to the hot dog and sausage game. I was not disappointed.
I ordered a couple Rhody dogs and an order of fries for lunch from Wally’s Wieners (https://wallyswieners.com) in Newport. They were delicious. I actually had my second quarter-pound Rhody dog and some of my fries the following morning for breakfast. If you visit Newport for business or pleasure, I recommend that you pay Wally’s Wieners a visit. Maybe during my next visit to Rhode Island, I will try coffee milk. It’s the state’s official drink.
Below is a link to the Wikipedia article detailing what makes a hot wiener a hot wiener. After that are two recipes for making your own Rhode Island hot wieners. Enjoy! 😋
