It may come as a shock to city dwellers, but a significant number of people in the United States and around the world live in some degree of proximity to large, predatory animals. Some time back, after having moved to rural, Northern Illinois, there was an unconfirmed mountain lion sighting in the area. Prior to that, in relatively recent history, there have been confirmed sightings and mountain lions that have been shot and killed in this area. And there are certainly “wilder” and more remote areas in the United States and the rest of the world.
Now not all of the people living in some degree of proximity to large predators will choose to carry a firearm, a bladed weapon, bear spray, or similar item on a daily basis. In many cases, the risk of having a potentially dangerous encounter with a large predator may be very, very low. But being prepared for such an encounter is a legitimate concern for many people, particularly for people living, working, and/or playing in more remote areas.
