A “Normal” Life?

“There's no normal life, Wyatt, it's just life. Get on with it.” — Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday in Tombstone

I positively love this scene from the film, Tombstone, where Val Kilmer’s Doc Holliday encourages his friend, Kurt Russell’s Wyatt Earp, to get on with the business of living and to follow his heart and pursue a life with Miss Josephine Marcus played by Dana Delaney (click on the link at the bottom of this post to watch it).

I have posted before about my admiration and love for this film and its story in my earlier blog post, “A Love Story Set in the Old West” (https://www.apirateontheprairie.com/post/a-love-story-set-in-the-old-west). It is truly an entertaining movie with a star-studded cast. In addition to the love story between Kurt Russell’s Wyatt Earp and Dana Delaney’s Josephine Marcus, there are the relationships that the Earp brothers have with Val Kilmer’s Doc Holliday and with each other and the bonds of friendship and brotherhood displayed by both factions.

I think that Doc’s stated perspective on life is spot-on in this scene. I learned some time ago, admittedly with some help, that I shouldn’t look back at life and score myself by what I “should” have done. I was gently admonished that if I had really known better than to do something, I probably wouldn’t have done it. I also got to a point where I, generally speaking anyway, will take my shot and pursue what and who I want and not let the fear of failure and rejection get in my way. Is that always the case? Perhaps not, but I am far bolder and confident than I used to be in my teens and early twenties. I celebrate that transformation.

Again, I encourage you to check out the video by clicking on the link below and to watch or rewatch the movie in its entirety. Happy trails, amigos.
